Designing a GUI for complex scientific workflows

The project started with a Java-based backend containing complex scientific logic. The challenge was to make these capabilities accessible to scientists who didn't have programming experience.

My role

I was responsible for translating complex scientific workflows into an intuitive graphical interface. I worked on the UX, UI, interaction design and data visualization, turning technical functionality into workflows that made sense from the user's perspective.

Rather than designing everything upfront, I worked iteratively with the development team and target users. We built and tested successive versions of the application, using feedback from scientists to continuously refine the experience.

The approach

I focused on simplifying complex interactions, structuring scientific data, and creating visualization tools that allowed users to explore computational results without interacting directly with the underlying code.

The result was a user-focused interface that acted as a bridge between the project's complex scientific backend and the researchers using it.
